Storyboard

Each video, movie or cartoon consists of separate plans – large, medium, general, distant, etc., which is displayed in the storyboard. It can be of 2 types: directed and on the blanks of the director. The director’s version is more expensive, as the artist performs a double work (the work of the director and the artist). The director’s blanks version is cheaper and is a drawing based on the director’s sketches (“cucumbers”).

This stage is very important because it is the starting point for the final version of the film, and helps to track the logic of the plot and the dynamics of what is happening.

The storyboard is also used to create Animatic. Animatic – generally understood as a series of static pictures shown in sequence, which show the keyframes of the film. Animatic helps to orient the future timekeeping of scenes with the help of visual and sound series (dialogues, sound effects).
The main difference between the storyboard made for Animatic and the usual storyboard is multilayered. Layering makes it possible to make a limited animation, which helps to understand in detail in each scene.

The whole storyboard creation process can be divided into stages:

1. sketches (drafts);
2. drawing;
3. filling (colouring).

Usually, at the first stage, the director’s storyboard is provided for the artist – “cucumbers”. The name itself characterizes the style of drawing.

In short, it is a schematic representation of the characters and the world around them. They help to understand how the director sees each scene, i.e. how many cameras should be involved in a particular scene, where they should be on the site, how the characters are located relative to the camera and each other, etc.

Our task is to ennoble the image by giving the characters guessing, required appearance, this also applies to clothe and physiology (height, facial and body structure, etc.), and to fill the surrounding world with necessary elements. This stage of work can be done by drawing with a pencil on paper, then digitizing with a scanner, or drawing on a graphics tablet. We send for approval.

If “cucumbers” have not given to you, it is possible to add in the price on storyboard as you will do the work of the director.

The title explains everything. After the sketches are approved, we draw them according to the customer’s requirements. If there are important moments for the customer, certain clothes, interior elements (table, chairs, etc.), ask REFERENCE in advance, so as not to redo the work on “100 times”.

This stage is recommended to be completely done on a graphics tablet to speed up the process and in any program convenient for you. The sketch lies with the lower layer, the upper layers draw each element or group of elements in the frame. Splitting elements into layers will help you to fill them in the same way.

Obviously, but it is a fact that if a frame is made entirely on one layer, any correction will require a lot of time because all the elements interact with each other. That is why it is recommended to work on a computer, not on paper.

The final stage in the storyboard. For pouring it is desirable to make separate layers from the contour. This goes back to the days of old classic animation and celluloid. On one side drew a contour, on the other colourful characters. Such independence will allow, without fear of spoiling the contour, to paint the necessary area. If necessary, make changes to the colour palette of the object.
I advise always to follow the sequence of work, follow the reference and approve each stage. In this case, there will be no conflict situations.
